The history of the cycling track

Recreatiepark the Wielerbaan, located on the Veluwe, owes its name to the cycling track that is actually in the middle of the park. The so-called Wageningse Wielerbaan was built in 1933 as an employment project. 70 unemployed people were employed to dig a pit and then pour a 12-centimetre-thick concrete layer. On Sunday 29 April 1934, this track was festively opened with an opening race in which cyclist Jan Pijnenburg, among others, was in action. The track had as many as 7500 standing places and 1000 seats, and several races were organised here for many years. After 1945, a holiday park was built around the track and the last official race on the track was held in 1967.

The cycling track today

These days, races may no longer be held at the cycling track, but the cycling track is still intact and present at the park. Indeed, the cycling track is the beating heart of the leisure park. In the middle of the cycling track are a playground, swimming pool and restaurant. Thus, the soul and history of the track continues to live on at Recreatiepark de Wielerbaan.
