Something nice is coming up again... Holiday money! Although the name suggests otherwise, the reality is often that this little extra in your head has already been spent three times before it appears in your account at all. That new washing machine, an extra buffer in the savings account or the summer holiday you already booked in January.

With these 5 tips, you can really make the most of your holiday money this year - and keep unforgettable memories.

1. Invest in memories

That new gadget or that trendy garden chair is nice, but you soon get used to it. Scientific research shows that experiences keep us happy much longer than material things. A weekend laughing with the family, walking through the woods or barbecuing together on the terrace of a holiday cottage; these are the memories you will still be passing around the dinner table five years from now.

2. The 'big holiday' already paid for? Go for a mini-break

Have you already ticked off your summer holiday to the sun? Great! But summer is still a while away and the battery is slowly running out. Use a small part of your holiday money for a mini-break': a lovely last-minute weekend away in your own country.

3. Upgrade your holiday feeling to 'luxury'

When you do go away, make it special. Use your holiday money this year for that extra upgrade you normally find just too expensive. Instead of standard accommodation, book aluxury holiday home with its own hot tub, sauna or spa. That's a real investment in your mental health and ultimate relaxation.

4. Buy time

Spending holiday money on a long, tiring plane trip including sleepless nights at the airport? It can be done differently. By opting for a holiday or weekend away at home, you save oceans of time. No stress at customs, no hours of traffic jams on the Route du Soleil, but within a two-hour drive with your legs up on your own private terrace. After all, time is money too!

5. Set up an "advance fund

Nothing is a bigger waste than holiday money spent on daily shopping because it happens to be in your current account. Open a separate (savings) pot and call it 'Voorpret'. Use this budget in the coming months for really nice things: that spontaneous dinner on the terrace, the tickets for the amusement park with the kids, or that luxurious barbecue meat box during your weekend trip.
